Guava & Cheese Turnovers

Guava & Cheese Turnovers

Marcy Inspired
These Cuban-inspired Guava Turnovers are irresistibly delicious and, with only four ingredients, they could not be an easier to make. After trying them at a Cuban bakery in Tampa recently, I was inspired to make them. In Spanish, these are called "Pastelitos de Guayaba y Queso" because they not only have guava paste in them, they have cream cheese, which gives the sweetness a wonderful balance. Ingredients

  • Store-bought frozen Puff Pastry Sheets
  • Guava Paste
  • Cream Cheese Softened
  • 1 Egg

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350º
  • Take frozen, pre-made puff pastry sheets out of box and let them thaw a few minutes so that they become easier to work with.
  • Place on flat surface. Use lightly floured rolling pin to roll sheets out slightly, pinching together any cracks in the dough.
  • Using paring knife, cut each sheet into four equal squares.
  • Cut guava paste into slices about 1/4" thick and place diagonally in center of each pastry square.
  • Spread cream cheese on top of guava paste.
  • Whisk egg in small bowl to use as egg wash.
  • Brush egg wash along edges of each pastry square.
  • Fold pastry over to form triangles and press edges down to form seal.
  • Slice small vents across top to create heat vents.
  • Place turnovers on baking sheet, then brush egg wash on top to cover entire surface.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
